Abstract
Monkeypox, or Monkey Pox, has emerged as a significant public health challenge globally and, particularly, in Colombia. Since its identification in 1970, the virus has shown an alarming ability to spread beyond its endemic regions, leading the World Health Organization to declare health emergencies.
Colombia has faced a notable increase in monkeypox cases, with more than 4 298 reported as of august 2024. Despite this increase, it is encouraging to note that 83\% of those affected have managed to recover, reflecting the effectiveness of the measures. strategies implemented by health authorities. However, the persistence of the virus and its ability to cause serious complications underscore the need for continued surveillance and appropriate preventative measures.
This manuscript not only seeks to inform about the current status of monkeypox in Colombia, but also to highlight the importance of collaboration between health professionals and the community to mitigate its spread. As we face this health crisis, it is vital that a proactive focus on education and prevention is maintained, ensuring a coordinated response that protects public health and promotes a safer future.
This article delves into the characteristics of the virus, its history, virology and epidemiology, as well as its impact in the Colombian context.
